Exceeding 20000 square kilometres of sandy surfaced area mostly barren or cultivated on rains is located approximately in the center from Lahore in the east and Quetta in the west. Gilgit in North and Karachi in the south. With the inauguration of almost completed bridge on Indus River between Layyah and Taunsa, the distance towards western borders is further reduced.
Historically, Layyah remained center for administration, trade and economic. Found in sixteenth century the town possessed position of a division. Firstly, the Baloch Mirani Tribe, than Afghan Saddozai Tribe ruled the area followed by Sikh dynasty whereafter the British. All maintaining the administrative value of Layyah.
Tactical and strategic training potential of the area was recognised back in early eighties once the Zarb-i-Momin excercise was conceived and executed. Layyah remained confluence of the planning.
Apropos of the same agricultural potential of the lands, it is emphasized that the area be given due value.
Having already completed first phase of Thal Greater Canal and begining of second phase stipulates concern of the government in agricultural development of the region.
For appropriate utilisation of the training potential for the armed forces and the ease of shifting these assets in all directions of the country, it is strongly recommended that some military outfits be located in the vicinity.
Environmental change is also envisaged with greening of the desert by pouring in the uniformed troops and their peace time employment for development of the lands.
Administrative level of the town be restored to its historical position as division. Projects of Thal Greater Canal be geared up and some industrial estates be moved in. Last but not the least, communication infrastructure be improved particularly to bring this Neglected Nucleus at par with other localities of South Punjab.
