Burhan Wani
Burhan Wani, a commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen famous for appearing on social media in military fatigues to attract young people to join the fight against Indian forces, was martyred in southern Kashmir on July 8 last year.
His martyrdom ignited widespread protests across the Kashmir valley with furious locals demanding an end to a spree of hostility and oppression from Indian forces.
Rallies in Occupied Kashmir
On first anniversary of his martyrdom, the situation of the restive region is tense as scores of Kashmiris organised rallies to pay homage to their leader who became a symbol of resistance in the face of brutality.
Indian troops have sealed all roads leading to Wani’s hometown in Tral area of south Kashmir to prevent people from going there. However, clashes erupted between police and public when efforts were made to reach the family home.
Earlier, Indian authorities had shut down the internet services in occupied Kashmir to bar activist from motivating the general public.
